When my doctor recommended that I cut out gluten, dairy, and eggs from my diet in early 2018 to help improve symptoms from an autoimmune disease that were worsening, I thought my life was over. Not literally, of course, but in the sense that all of my favorite foods and most of my diet consisted of gluten, which is a protein found in wheat, rye, barley, and triticale. Ever since that day, i’ve been on my gluten-free lifestyle journey. Read more below about five unexpected positives I discovered to going gluten-free and that it wasn’t indeed life ending.
I felt better!
I lost 30 pounds (to be exact) by doing nothing but eliminating gluten, dairy, and eggs from my diet. It’s amazing what the body does when you eliminate sources of inflammation. Since I had to cut out the unhealthy stuff from my diet it has forced me to experiment and be creative with the foods I am eating. I’ve gone from eating bacon, egg, and cheese breakfast sandwiches with caramel iced coffee to kale smoothies and green juices.
I’ve discovered restaurants, bakeries, and entrepreneurs that I never would have.
Would I have stepped foot in a gluten-free, vegan chocolate shop before? Absolutely not. Is it my favorite bakery now? You bet, and I have a great relationship with the owner providing feedback about the items she is selling and new products she’s creating. I’ve also discovered tons of great restaurants with gluten-free menus!
A support system.
I’m a member of two great gluten-free community groups on Facebook that really helped me go gluten-free. When I started, I had absolutely no idea what I was doing and my doctor didn’t give me any information so I turned to the internet! The groups were a great source of information, support, and inspiration and encouraged me to start my blog.
A successful blog and following on Instagram.
The first day I went gluten-free I spent hours looking at blogs and Instagram accounts, which were a great source of information – but none of them told me all of the information I was looking for. I decided to start my own blog to help others going through the same journey I was. My articles about how to go gluten-free and reviews of gluten-free products got more views and attention than I ever expected – and now companies are sending me free products to review, and a loyal audience!
My mental health improved.
Before I went gluten-free, I was tired and felt terrible every day. Sleeping 12+ hours a day, constantly nauseous, ongoing digestive issues and just not able to enjoy life. Now, I wake up feeling refreshed and ready to take on the world! My performance at work has increased, and I’m able to do the things I love again and have a social life without needing a nap.
Was going gluten-free hard? Yes. Do I miss bread? Absolutely. Would I do it over again if it meant going from feeling terrible to feeling amazing? 100 times over. – MM
